Restoration projects

A new restoration project: a Van Hool - Fiat from 1970

NostalBus has succeeded over the past 15 years in reactivating and/or restoring a considerable number of historic buses. The previous major restoration project was the restoration of our Van Hool - Cummins AU124 #4481, which ran from 2015 to 2020.

At the beginning of 2020, we already took on our next project. An old Van Hool - Fiat from 1970 was donated to us by the coach company De Zigeuner from Diepenbeek and will be carefully restored over the coming years.

Just like our previous projects, a project account will also be opened for this project at Herita. On that project account, everyone can make tax-deductible donations. Donations of 40 euros or more per year are 30% deductible through Belgian personal income tax. You can read more about it at the bottom of this page.

The NostalBus collection

NostalBus is one of the five non-profit organisations in Belgium responsible for the restoration, preservation and operation of historical line buses. We focus our collection policy on the period 1977 – 1991, differentiating ourselves from other associations that often work over a much longer time span. The 8 vehicles currently in our own collection are heritage and reflect a diverse collection of buses from the relevant period, all representative of the Belgian public transport of yesteryear. Moreover, all vehicles, except one, are of Belgian manufacture. NostalBus is part of the Flemish umbrella META (Mobility Heritage Tram and Bus), co-managed by the Flemish public transport operator De Lijn.

1977-1991: a colourful period

NostalBus preserves, in accordance with its statutes, moving bus heritage and related objects from the period of 1977 to 1991. Although this period spans only 14 years, it includes many interesting twists. During this short period, national public bus transport had no less than 6 different colour schemes. Until 1977, the red buses of the NMVB/SNCV characterised the streetscape, which would become orange from that year onwards. The green buses, which operated on behalf of the SNCB (railways), gradually disappeared from the streetscape from 1977 as the SNCB had to cease its bus activities and the management of these contracts was transferred to the NMVB/SNCV. In 1989, the NMVB/SNCV launched a new fresh white livery with blue stripes, replacing the classic orange. This period would not last long: due to the regionalisation of urban and regional transport, the NMVB/SNCV was split into what we now know as De Lijn in Flanders and the TEC in Wallonia. The various city companies, with the exception of the MIVB/STIB which is still active in the Brussels region, were also absorbed by the Flemish or Walloon transport company.

Over the past 10 years, NostalBus has managed to collect the majority of these distinctive colour schemes through reactivation and restoration of various bus types. What is still missing is the green colour scheme. This project will change that: the bus from 1970 – also the oldest in the own collection – operated under a leased contract for 7 years on behalf of the SNCB and thus in the green colours.

The project bus: Siau 263103

Siau was established in 1954 and was taken over by the De Decker – Van Riet group in 1999. During its existence, around 23 buses passed through. Until 1977, the vehicles mainly operated on the supplementary SNCB bus connection 53a between Ghent, Dendermonde, Aalst, and Londerzeel. In 1977, the company secured contract 2631 from the NMVB/SNCV and the buses could be found on various routes in the wider region between Londerzeel, Aalst, Ghent, and Dendermonde. For more information about the history of the company, you can read under the following title.

Since 1958, around 100 buses of type 682 operated in Belgium, all with private operators and spread across the entire country. The last bus of this type was taken out of service by a Walloon operator in 1999 after 29 years of service! The bus preserved by NostalBus is of the square type, but in the 1950s and 60s, more rounded models were mainly built. One by one, these vehicles were equipped with a Fiat engine.

Siau operated bus services with this vehicle until the end of 1987. A certain period later, the bus was taken over by the coach company De Zigeuner from Diepenbeek. There, the bus received its first restoration. In the years that followed, the bus was kept statically, but it deteriorated significantly. De Zigeuner donated the bus to NostalBus. We are now committed to restoring it to excellent condition and also maintaining it in a drivable state in the future.

A touch of history about the company Siau...

with special thanks to Walter Deckx and Steve Delaplace for their help with this reconstruction

Frans Laureys, from Damstraat 32 in Hamme, requests on 18 March 1925 together with a certain Jan Van den Berghe (also from Hamme) a line Sint-Niklaas - Hamme via Elversele. They have a Ford-T bus. In a letter from January 1926, Laureys informs the deputation that Van den Berghe has transferred his rights to him.

On 27 December 1927, he requests the line again. It now runs via Kettermuit and Elversele. He likely receives a provisional permit. The royal decree that makes everything official follows only on 4 September 1929.

When in mid 1935 the Autobus des Flandres has their authorisation for the line Sint-Niklaas - Aalst revoked, Laureys asks if he may extend his line to Dendermonde, until a definitive solution is found. Since the line largely runs parallel to railway line 56, the NMBS decides to claim the line for itself. The company submits a file to the deputation for the line Sint-Niklaas - Dendermonde.

Meanwhile, Laureys decides to transfer his line to the NMBS. This happens on 9 June 1936. A month earlier (8 May), the royal decree granting the NMBS the authorisation for the line Sint-Niklaas - Dendermonde was already published. The NMBS decides to keep Frans Laureys as a tenant. In the NMBS timetable, the line is assigned the number 200. From 23 October 1940, the service is prohibited, as it runs parallel to the railway. All equipment has also been claimed.

After the liberation, the NMBS receives a provisional permit on 20 March 1945 to restart the line. Meanwhile, Jules Siau has become a partner of Frans Laureys. In 1947, we find two Renaults (33-7 and 33-26). Later, a Büssing (33-43) is added. In the timetable, we find the line as 237, renumbered as 266 in May 1952.

On 2 June 1957, passenger traffic on railway line 56 (Sint-Niklaas - Dendermonde) was discontinued. A replacement bus service 56 was introduced, which absorbed the supplementary service 266. It is the Local Railways that will operate this line for the NMBS. The company Laureys-Siau disappears. Likely as compensation for his lost journeys, Jules Siau begins on the same day to operate on the replacement service 53a Gent-Londerzeel, which he shares with Alfons De Decker.

On 1 July 1967, the company Siau Gebroeders was established as the successor to the sole proprietorship of Jules Siau. In 1977, the NMBS ceased bus operations and the contracts were automatically transferred to the Local Railways. From then on, the buses no longer operated in the green NMBS livery but in the orange NMVB colours. The buses were incorporated into contract 2631.

On 11 October 1996, the name of the company changed to Michel Siau nv.

In 1999, the company was split and 2 new entities were established. On one hand, Michel Siau continued with the activities of a BMW concession (current garage Gregoir & Co in Dendermonde). On the other hand, the name Siau Gebroeders was revived concerning bus operations. In the same year, that last branch was taken over by De Decker-Van Riet. On 26 July 2001, that company then merged with Cars Lux. Since then, the legal context has remained unchanged.

The project in detail

We expect to need about 4 years to fully restore the bus.

  • 2025-2026: chassis and other metal works, construction of new side windows and rear window, renewal of the exhaust line, replacement of pneumatic parts and braking system
  • 2026-2027: renewal of the electrical circuits, inspection and revision of the drive train and other mechanical parts
  • 2027-2028: preparation and execution of the actual painting works, finishing of the interior

These works are always carried out by our own team of volunteers from the Technical Working Group where possible.

The total cost for the roadworthy restoration is estimated at approximately 30,000 euros.

Follow the restoration closely via our socials and the Nostalvlog on Youtube!

We regularly post updates on our Facebook page and on Instagram. Since the end of 2025, we have also been regularly vlogging about the progress of the project via our Youtube channel. So be sure to subscribe to stay updated!

Support our project with a tax-deductible donation!

Since 2012, NostalBus has been affiliated with Herita vzw. Herita is an important partner for heritage in Flanders and is essentially the Flemish National Trust. The main tasks of Herita are:

  • increasing support for immovable heritage

  • strengthening the heritage sector

  • developing, managing and making immovable heritage accessible

Herita also manages monuments (such as the Castle of Laarne or Fort Napoleon in Ostend).

Herita offers us the opportunity to open a "project account". Through this project account, donations can be collected, specifically intended for this project. Herita is recognised as an institution for issuing tax certificates. This creates an important advantage for the donor. Donations from 40 euros (on an annual basis) are thus 30% deductible through taxes.

A little example: you want to support our project and make a donation of 250 euros. The year following your deposit, you will automatically receive a tax certificate from Herita. This will automatically appear in your pre-filled tax return. In this way, you receive a tax reduction of 30% x 250 = 75 euros. Net, the donation therefore only costs you 175 euros. However, NostalBus can fully utilise the 250 euros. A win-win situation!

Donations are more than welcome! You can make your donation online via the Herita website (payment via Bancontact) using the button below.
